Location

The Gatehouse is located at 57 Cheviot Road, Lowry Bay, Wellington. We recommend guests rent a car during their stay with us, however there are also public transport options.

Directions

At the Airport:

Take a taxi or a shuttle bus outside the arrival hall.The taxi fare is from around NZD$70.

By car, from Wellington Airport or the city centre:

  1. From the airport, look for Wellington City and Motorway signs. Once on State Highway 1, follow the signs for Lower Hutt and Petone (SH2).
  2. Take the left exit for Petone, and then stay in the right-hand lane. This will put you on the Petone Esplanade with the harbour on your right. Stay on this road and follow the signs for Seaview, Eastbourne or Eastern Bays.
  3. Once past the wharf at Point Howard, Lowry Bay is the next big bay round. Turn left into Cheviot Road. We are on the corner of Lady Bell Grove and Cheviot Rd.

From the Kapiti Coast toward Ngauranga Interchange:

On State Highway 1 southbound, take the left turn onto State Highway 2 at the Interchange, then follow the directions above from (2).

From the Wairarapa:

On State Highway 2 southbound to Wellington City, take exit for Petone to get onto Petone Esplanade then follow signs for Seaview, Eastbourne or Eastern Bays. Follow directions of above from (3).

Travel times:

  • Airport: 25 – 30 minutes
  • Wellington City Centre: 15 – 20 minutes
  • Interisland Ferry Terminal: 15 minutes

Transport Options

Wellington is not difficult to navigate, and we can advise you of the best places to park your vehicle during the day when you are sightseeing.

For guests who prefer not to drive, there is a good public bus system that runs from the end of Cheviot Road into the city and beyond.

For taxi service we use Hutt & City Taxis or Corporate cabs. The cab fare from Wellington CBD to The Gatehouse starts from around NZD$45.

The East by West Ferry, departs Days Bay and sails directly into the CBD in 20 minutes. You can drive your car to the ferry at Days Bay and park free of charge at the wharf. On the ferry, you might be lucky and spot a dolphin or an orca in the harbour on the way!
